Kumbhalgarh the hill fort of Rajasthan is a world heritage site. There are seven hill forts of Rajasthan which are part of the UNESCO world heritage site. To make it more clear one could understand that there are 40 world heritage sites in India. Kumbhalgarh fort built by Raja Kumbha in 15th century. Rana Kumbha kingdom streched from Rajasthan to Gwalior in Madhya Pradesh. Among 84 of different structures/forts, 32 of them built during the reign of Rana kumbha. Though the exact time of its construction is not known for the lack of such evidence. But among all Kumbhalgarh fort is the largest hill fort at the time. This fort also enjoys the designation as the Great wall of India. Kumbhalgarh the hill fort is about 1100 m above sea level on the Aravalli Range. It has a perimeter with the second longest wall in the world that extends 36 km. Making this fortified wall the second longest wall after the great wall of China. It has seven fortified gateway and around 70 Hindu and Jain temples in its wide complex.

One can enter the Kumbhalgarh the hill fort from its first entrance gate known as Aaret Pol. Moving ahead you can find another Gate on the downward known as Halla Pol. Just after the Halla Pol there is a stepped water tank called as Badshahi Bavdi. Bavdi means well, built to provide water for the army of Akbar in 1578. The other gate is half km away is the Hanuman gate a double storeyed gate with octagonal bastions. And the Ram Gate is the main entrance of the fort. There is another entrance towards the east, called Vijay Pol or victory gate.

There are five more gates between Ram Pol to Badal Mahal, the Palace built on the highest point of the fort. Names of these gates are Bhairon Pol, Nimboo Pol, Chaugan Pol, Pagda Pol and Ganesh Pol. Most buildings are visible from the Ram Pol, which is considered an architectural specimen.

how to reach Kumabhalgarh

Reaching Kumbhalgarh is very easy from Udaipur city. On the route from Jaipur to Udaipur it lies around 85 km from the outskirt of Udaipur. If you go by a car it takes around 2-3 hours from Udaipur city via Maharana Partap marg or other highways. From Jaipur to Udaipur there are many trains that reach you the Udaipur city. And one can take flights from Delhi or Jaipur to Udaipur. Besides the city of Udaipur, there are many attractive and popular places for sightseeing. The most attractive is Chilka lake and lake palace.

For a one day excursion you can visit many places including Kumbhalgarh Fort and if time permits the Ranakpur temple. Rankpur temple is a jain temple and very famous for its beautiful architecture. it also lies around 95 km from Udaipur and takes around 2-3 hours only. it is a must visit monument if you go to Udaipur.
